After completing the university, the norm is to find graduates distributing cvs everywhere, in hunt of job opportunities.. Trust me: its not a pleasant situation to find oneself in; this is the least of the reasons you want to be your own boss. If you want a job that offers you greater flexibility and very rewarding returns on your efforts, its your own job. To be your boss presupposes that you abide by the following principles.

You would have to strategize. If you strategize well, you will find your way around all difficult situations. Strategizing involves knowing what you want to achieve and identifying how to get there. In identifying how to get to your end point, you must identify constraints or obstacles and find out how to overcome such restraints. Remember there’s always a way out; so brainstorm to discover that way. You don’t need funds to start your business. What you need is a brilliant idea. This sounds like a bluff but believe me it’s very true. Your idea should entail how you start from a capital balance of zero and realize the balance grow.

Richard wants to be a multi millionaire movie producer but he’s got nothing now. To shoot a movie, you need cameras, technicians, a crew and millions of cedis to acquire all these. Strategizing means knowing what is possible and what is not, and pursuing what is possible. Richard realizes its not possible for him to shoot with zero balance. However, Richard has very brilliant ideas for movies. He writes a very interesting story and writes the script for the story. He walks to Venus films and manages to secure an appointment with Frank Rajah, a movie director. Rajah gets fascinated by Richard’s script and agrees to help him shoot the movie. He makes some Ghana cedis from the shoot. He has enough funds to shoot a movie now. .

To help strategize well, you need creativity. To be your boss, you have to be unique. If you just duplicate what someone is doing or has already done, you’ll barely succeed. With creativity, you can identify a human need and a brilliant way to satisfy that need. And when you do so, you get paid. Again with creativity, you will outsmart your competitors. You don’t always have to do what your competitors do in a better way, you just have to do it a different way, a way they probably haven’t thought of or would not bother to venture into..Come on, take advantage of your competitors’ big wit attitude and serve clients who have been neglected. Such clients will be grateful you thought about them and will pay you.

And now, the hardest, but most rewarding as well: persistence and hard work. Many giant businesses you see around started in garages. Now such businesses own buildings and motor vans worth billions of Ghana Cedis. You should remember that the road will be rough so that when such times come, you don’t give up. Stop wasting time being pessimistic. You’ll be glad you started early.
